Resilience in Beirut’s Southern Suburbs; From Temporary Displacement to the Formation of Collective Consciousness

The experience of war for the residents of Beirut’s southern suburbs is no longer merely fear and anticipation; it has transformed into a new understanding of survival and steadfastness that has altered their behavior and decisions.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): For many residents of Beirut’s southern suburbs, southern Lebanon, and the Beqaa Valley, the experience of war is no longer just the fear of bombardment or waiting for threatening plans; it has become a daily experience that has transformed their behavior and their understanding of the concept of survival.

According to the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar, many of them, drawing on experiences accumulated during past wars, now consider the warnings of the Israeli enemy as part of a psychological war, a war that targets wills just as much as it targets places, rather than being a definitive indication of the impossibility of living or a compulsion to leave. Therefore, the option of resilience, even in its minimal form, is emerging as a collective position within the supporting environment; a position rooted as much in dignity as in adapting to the conditions of war.

They consider this choice more compatible with their dignity than prolonged displacement or succumbing to exploitative conditions. Perhaps this is what has led the Israeli enemy to extend its threats to the entirety of Beirut’s southern suburbs, marking its entire map as red and issuing a mass evacuation order.

However, this action has created greater awareness among the people that what the enemy disseminates does not necessarily indicate the targeting of specific military objectives, but rather that everyone is targeted—a matter that has strengthened their participation in defending their existence. This conclusion is repeated among many in various forms.
