Ramadan lights illuminate Frankfurt city center with community participation

The city of Frankfurt has once again illuminated its city center to mark the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, in a ceremony attended by representatives of the local Muslim community.

AhlulBayt News Agency: The city of Frankfurt has once again illuminated its city center to mark the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, in a ceremony attended by representatives of the local Muslim community.

The festive decorations, installed along Große Bockenheimer Straße, feature crescent moons, stars, traditional lanterns, and the greeting “Happy Ramadan''. Now in its third consecutive year, the initiative is intended to symbolize social cohesion and acknowledge the Muslim community’s longstanding presence in the city.

The lights were officially switched on in the early evening in the presence of Frankfurt Mayor Nargess Eskandari-Grünberg, city officials, and community representatives. Municipal leaders said the display reflects Frankfurt’s diversity and expresses solidarity with Muslims observing Ramadan.

Frankfurt’s Ramadan illumination forms part of a broader trend in several European cities to publicly recognize major religious and cultural occasions. Supporters describe such initiatives as gestures of inclusion and intercultural respect, while discussions continue in some circles about the role of religious symbolism in public spaces.

The Muslim community in Frankfurt is estimated at around 130,000 people. In recent years, the city council formally approved Ramadan lighting displays as a way to recognize the month’s cultural significance and promote mutual understanding.
