Iran summons Italy’s ambassador over foreign minister’s IRGC remarks

Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday summoned Italy’s ambassador following “irresponsible” remarks by the Italian foreign minister regarding the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC).

AhlulBayt News Agency: Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday summoned Italy’s ambassador following “irresponsible” remarks by the Italian foreign minister regarding the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC).

Paola Amadei, Italy’s ambassador to Tehran, was summoned to the Foreign Ministry by Alireza Yousefi, Assistant Foreign Minister and director general for Western Europe affairs, on Tuesday.

The summon came a day after Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani urged the European Union to proscribe the IRGC as a “terrorist organization” in the wake of foreign-backed riots and terrorism across the country.

Yousefi lodged a strong protest against Italy’s position, stressing the IRGC’s legal status as an official branch of the Iranian armed forces.

He warned of the damaging consequences of any labeling of the IRGC and called on Italy to revise its ill-considered approach toward Iran.

The Italian ambassador said she would promptly convey Iran’s position to her government.
