Merchant ship hit by projectiles and drones in Red Sea near Yemen

A merchant vessel sailing near western Yemen was attacked with grenades, small arms, and drone boats, causing a fire onboard. While no group claimed responsibility, the incident follows a pattern of Yemeni operations in response to the war in Gaza.

AhlulBayt News Agency: The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) has reported that a commercial ship sailing through the Red Sea caught fire after being hit by multiple projectiles near Yemen’s western coastline.

The agency stated that armed men in small boats opened fire on the unidentified vessel 51 nautical miles southwest of Hudaydah, using rocket-propelled grenades and small arms.

UKMTO noted that the ship’s onboard security teams returned fire against the attackers, describing the event as still unfolding.

The attack caused a fire onboard the merchant ship, according to UKMTO’s statement.

Ambrey, a British maritime security firm, reported that the vessel was initially approached and attacked by eight skiffs while traveling north through the Red Sea.

It later confirmed that two drone boats had struck the ship, while the security guards onboard managed to destroy two others.

No group has officially claimed responsibility for the attack so far. However, it comes amid ongoing maritime operations by Yemen’s armed forces in response to the Israeli war in Gaza.

Since Israel’s military campaign against Gaza began in October 2023, Yemeni forces have conducted numerous operations targeting ships linked to Israel and its allies.

The Yemeni military has declared that attacks will continue until Israel halts its air and ground offensives in Gaza, where over 57,300 Palestinians have reportedly been killed.

In addition, Yemeni forces have launched operations against American and British vessels, describing them as retaliation for Western strikes on Yemeni territory.
