AhlulBayt News Agency: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has harshly condemned the Israeli regime for what he described as “genocide” against Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip.
Speaking at the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, Lula said that the global community cannot ignore Israel’s actions, including indiscriminate civilian killings and the deliberate use of starvation as a weapon of war.
Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, which began in October 2023, has reportedly killed at least 57,418 Palestinians, according to figures from the Gaza Health Ministry, a source recognized by the UN.
BRICS nations have so far disagreed on how strongly to denounce Israel’s actions in Gaza.
However, a diplomatic source told reporters that the summit’s final statement will likely deliver a firm call for Israel to end the war and agree to a ceasefire with the Palestinians.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump earlier this year threatened to impose “100% tariffs” on any BRICS member that supported replacing the US dollar with an alternative currency.
The BRICS coalition—which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates—has voiced frustration over Washington’s control of the global financial system.
In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated at a previous BRICS summit that the US is pushing nations away by turning the dollar into a political tool to pressure foreign governments.
Putin emphasized that this strategy is backfiring. “We are not the ones rejecting the dollar,” he said. “But if we’re blocked from using it, we must look for alternatives.”
