AhlulBayt News Agency: A new study has revealed that nearly 100,000 Palestinians have been killed since Israel launched its war on Gaza in October 2023. The research, led by University of London economist Professor Michael Spagat and Palestinian political scientist Khalil Shikaki, surveyed 2,000 households in Gaza, representing nearly 10,000 individuals.
According to the findings, by January 2025, approximately 75,200 people had died violently—mostly due to Israeli munitions—while an additional 8,540 died from non-violent causes such as hunger and disease. Since then, the Gaza Health Ministry has reported over 10,000 more deaths, bringing the total to nearly 100,000.
The researchers argue that the official figures understate the true scale of the crisis, which has been worsened by starvation, illness, and attacks on aid distribution points. Spagat described the war as “one of the bloodiest conflicts of the 21st century.”
He noted that around 4% of Gaza’s population has been killed, a proportion unmatched in recent history. The study also found that 56% of the dead were women or children under 18—more than double the rate seen in most modern conflicts.
The Israeli daily Haaretz called this statistic “exceptional” compared to nearly every war since World War II. Israel began its assault on Gaza following a Hamas-led operation on October 7, 2023, which was in response to years of Israeli oppression.
Despite the staggering death toll, Israel has failed to achieve its stated goals of eliminating Hamas and rescuing captives held in Gaza.
