Macron: US strikes on Iran have no legal basis

French President Macron said U.S. strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites violate international law and urged diplomacy over force.

AhlulBayt News Agency: French President Emmanuel Macron has declared that the recent U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities lack any legal justification under international law.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store in Oslo on Monday, Macron criticized the strikes on Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan, which occurred a day earlier.

He stated, “Even if one believes there is legitimacy in neutralizing Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, there is no legal framework under international law that permits such action. These strikes have no legal basis.”

Macron stressed that disputes over Iran’s nuclear program must be resolved through diplomatic and technical channels, not military aggression.

He warned of the risk of uncontrolled escalation, including nuclear proliferation and retaliatory strikes on other countries in the region.

Macron also highlighted the potential global consequences of the U.S. aggression, particularly if Iran were to close the Strait of Hormuz, which would have severe economic repercussions.

The U.S. strikes came amid ongoing Israeli aggression against Iran that began on June 13, resulting in over 400 deaths, including military commanders, scientists, and civilians.

In retaliation, Iran launched multiple missile and drone strikes on strategic military and intelligence targets in the occupied territories.

Israeli authorities imposed strict media censorship to obscure the true scale of casualties.

France condemns Israeli strike on Tehran’s Evin Prison

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot condemned Israel’s missile strike on Evin Prison in Tehran, calling it “unacceptable” and warning that it endangered the lives of two French nationals held there on espionage charges.

Barrot confirmed that the detainees, Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, were unharmed and urged Israel to halt military actions to allow space for diplomacy.

Meanwhile, Iran’s ambassador to London, Ali Mousavi, urged the UK to take a clear stance on the U.S. strikes, emphasizing the need to uphold international law and the UN Charter.

He asserted that Iran reserves the right to respond under Article 51 of the UN Charter, which affirms the right to self-defense in the event of armed attack.
