Prague’s Muslim community struggles to establish a central mosque

gue’s Muslim community has faced repeated rejections from landlords while attempting to establish a central mosque. A previous Muslim prayer space in the city center was shut down due to complaints from local residents.

AhlulBayt News Agency: In the Czech Republic, where anti-Muslim narratives are prevalent due to far-right rhetoric and political discourse, Prague’s Muslim community continues to face obstacles in its efforts to establish a central mosque.

According to The New Arab, Prague’s Islamic Foundation has been denied rental agreements by landlords at least ten times in the past six months. Each rejection occurred after the foundation disclosed its intention to use the property as a place of worship. While some mosques exist on the outskirts of the city, the community is advocating for a more accessible and centrally located mosque.

Prague previously had a Muslim prayer space in the city center, situated on the ground floor of a hotel. However, it was shut down after the property owner received over 500 complaints from local residents and businesses, who objected to Muslims gathering outside after Friday prayers.

Although there are no official statistics on the total Muslim population in the Czech Republic, approximately 5,000 people identified as Muslim in the 2021 census.
