AhlulBayt News Agency: Barcelona’s city council has voted to sever official relations with the Israeli government and suspend its longstanding friendship agreement with Tel Aviv-Jaffa, citing the humanitarian crisis caused by Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.
According to Iran Press, the resolution, supported by the Socialist governing party along with far-left and pro-independence factions, aims to pressure Israeli authorities by formally ending the city's 1998 friendship pact with Tel Aviv. It also urges local institutions to cut ties with companies linked to the arms trade or profiting from the ongoing conflict.
Mayor Jaume Collboni emphasized the moral responsibility behind the decision, stating, “The suffering and death in Gaza over the past year and a half, and recent attacks by the Israeli government, make any relationship unviable.”
The council’s motion calls for the complete termination of official relations with Israel until it abides by international law and restores Palestinian rights.
This move follows Spain’s recognition of Palestine alongside Ireland and Norway, reinforcing growing European opposition to Israel’s military actions. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez remains one of the most vocal critics of Israel’s handling of the war.
While the decision is largely symbolic, it signals increasing tensions between Western governments and Israel, reflecting shifting political sentiments in Europe and growing grassroots solidarity with Palestine.
