AhlulBayt News Agency: Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has reaffirmed Iran's rejection of the two-state solution as a means of resolving the Palestinian issue, arguing that the approach has only worsened injustices faced by the Palestinian people.
During a meeting in Vatican City on Friday with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the Vatican, Araghchi emphasized that the two-state solution, despite being initially proposed as a resolution, has failed over the decades and has instead led to the continued violation of Palestinian rights.
He criticized Israel’s ongoing efforts to erase Palestine through colonial tactics and stated that the Islamic Republic supports an alternative approach.
Iran's proposed solution is to establish a single democratic state across all of Palestine, achieved through a referendum that includes all original inhabitants—Muslims, Jews, and Christians.
The official was echoing contents of a proposal devised by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
In his remarks, the foreign minister also highlighted the disastrous situation across the Palestinian territories, particularly in the Gaza Strip, where the Israeli regime has been staging a genocidal war and a simultaneous near-total siege since October 2023.
He stressed that the international community had both a legal and moral responsibility to act towards cessation of the atrocities.
“All countries and individuals must condemn the crimes in Gaza and take immediate action to halt these atrocities,” he said, calling for direly-needed humanitarian aid to be urgently sent into the coastal sliver.
Araghchi, who has traveled to Rome to participate in the fifth round of indirect talks between Iran and the United States, meanwhile, took the opportunity to brief senior Vatican officials on the Islamic Republic's position regarding the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
He reiterated that the country's nuclear energy program was aimed at peaceful purposes, and that the Islamic Republic maintained the right to harness nuclear energy for its developmental needs, in line with the international law.
The meeting also covered the latest developments in bilateral relations between Iran and the Vatican, as well as discussions on interfaith dialogue and peace efforts.
Araghchi emphasized the importance of ongoing discussions among various faiths towards promotion of mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence.
The meeting that was also attended by Vatican’s Foreign Minister Bishop Paul Gallagher, included expression of condolences for the passing of Pope Francis and congratulations for the election of Pope Leo XIV.
