AhlulBayt News Agency: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has denied claims that Iran received a written proposal from the United States for a nuclear deal, reaffirming the country’s right to peaceful uranium enrichment.
In a post on his X account on Friday, Araghchi stated that Iran had not received any written proposal from the US, either directly or indirectly. His remarks came after US President Donald Trump claimed that Tehran had received an alleged proposal and warned of unspecified consequences if Iran did not respond swiftly.
Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that Iran had a proposal and needed to act quickly or face repercussions. However, Araghchi dismissed these claims, describing US messaging as “confusing and contradictory.”
The Iranian diplomat reiterated that Iran remains firm in its stance: respect its rights and lift sanctions, and a deal can be reached. He also rejected reports suggesting Iran had accepted temporary restrictions on uranium enrichment levels.
Araghchi emphasized that Iran would never abandon its right to enrichment for peaceful purposes, a right granted to all signatories of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). He praised the resilience of the Iranian nation in resisting external pressure.
He further stated that Iran welcomes dialogue based on mutual respect but rejects any form of coercion.
On May 15, Araghchi reaffirmed that Iran would not dismantle any of its nuclear facilities, a demand repeatedly made by the US and its allies. He stressed that defending Iran’s nuclear rights, including enrichment, is non-negotiable.
Iran has engaged in four rounds of indirect talks with the US to replace the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Both sides have described the discussions as generally positive.
In 2018, Trump withdrew from the JCPOA, which had provided Iran with sanctions relief in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear activities. Iran now seeks guarantees that the US will remove all sanctions and will not unilaterally abandon a new agreement.
