AhlulBayt News Agency: The administration of US President Donald Trump is reportedly working on a plan to relocate up to 1 million Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to Libya.
According to NBC News, two individuals with direct knowledge of the plan and a former US official stated that the Trump administration has discussed the proposal with Libya’s leadership.
The sources indicated that, in exchange for resettling Palestinians, the US administration would likely release billions of dollars in frozen Libyan funds. However, no final agreement has been reached.
Basem Naim, a senior Hamas official, stated that Hamas was not aware of any discussions regarding the relocation of Palestinians to Libya.
Naim emphasized that Palestinians are deeply rooted in their homeland and are committed to defending their land, families, and future. He asserted that only Palestinians have the right to decide their fate.
Libya has faced instability and political conflict for nearly 14 years since the civil war that led to the US-backed overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi.
Since February, Trump has repeatedly advocated for taking control of Gaza and resettling its inhabitants, proposing to transform the area into a tourist attraction.
The proposal has been widely rejected by the Muslim world and several other nations, who argue that it constitutes ethnic cleansing.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently acknowledged that the Israeli military has been demolishing residences in Gaza to deter Palestinians from returning and force their emigration.
On March 18, Israel resumed its bombardment of Gaza, killing thousands of Palestinians and violating the two-month ceasefire agreement with Hamas.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel’s military campaign has killed at least 53,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children.
