AhlulBayt News Agency: A pregnant Muslim woman in Kolkata was allegedly denied medical care and subjected to religiously charged verbal abuse during a routine prenatal visit, prompting her family to file a police complaint and approach health authorities.
According to relatives, the incident occurred at the private clinic of Dr. C.K. Sarkar, who had been treating the woman, identified as A*, throughout her pregnancy.
Mehfuza Khatun, a family member, told The Observer Post that after the doctor inquired about A*'s full name during a consultation, her demeanor changed.
Khatun quoted the doctor as saying, “Go to madrasas or mosques for your treatment. That’s where they teach you how to become terrorists.”
The incident took place days after a deadly attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, where dozens of civilians, mainly tourists, were killed. Khatun alleged that the doctor referenced the violence, telling A*, “You people killed innocent Hindus in Pahalgam. You should be killed too.”
The woman, who had attended the appointment with her young daughter, left the clinic immediately and later contacted the doctor by phone. Khatun said the family possesses a recording of the call, during which the doctor allegedly reaffirmed her earlier remarks.
The family reports that A* is now suffering from emotional distress and has ceased treatment with Dr. Sarkar. Authorities have yet to take significant action, with officials reportedly requesting further documentation.
The family says they intend to pursue the matter through legal channels.
