KARACHI, Pakistan (AhlulBayt News Agency) - Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) leader Allama Ahmed Iqbal warned the Sindh government on Saturday that they would lay siege to Chief Minister’s House if former senator Faisal Raza Abidi is not released immediately.
Addressing a demonstration against Abidi’s arrest on Shahrah-e-Pakistan on Saturday evening, the MWM leader said that provincial rulers had given a wrong impression by arresting the former senator “at the behest of banned outfits”.
A number of people, including women and children, participated in the demonstration. They were carrying placards inscribed with slogans such as “Release Faisal” and “Stop victimisation of Shia Muslims”.
The participants demanded strict action against banned outfits (such as ASWJ, LeJ) and implementation of the National Action Plan in letter and spirit.
MWM leaders Ali Hussain Naqvi, Allama Anwar Jafferi, Allama Mubashir Hassan, Allama Sadiq Jafferi and Allama Ehsan Danish were also present.
Condemning Abidi’s arrest and killings of members of the Shia community in the city, MWM leaders said the Sindh government arrested the former senator on the demand of some banned outfits. “Where are the killers of Shias and why have they not been arrested so far?” they asked.
They said that terrorists involved in killings of Shias were roaming freely under Sindh government’s protection. They said that terrorists had been operating freely in the country for long. They said that at least 13 people fell prey to sectarian killings in Karachi after Muharram.
They said that rulers had ordered a crackdown on the Shia community instead of taking action against the banned outfits. They said that former senator’s arrest was part of this crackdown.
The MWM leaders said that banned outfits were a big threat to Pakistan’s sovereignty. They said that further negligence on part of the government would force the Shia community to start a nationwide protest drive.
The demonstration by the MWM created a massive traffic jam on Shahrah-e-Pakistan, a key artery of the city. Vehicles remained stuck on the road for hours.
Former Senator belonging to Pakistan People’s Party Faisal Raza Abidi was arrested in Karachi late on Friday as heavy contingents of the police and rangers conducted raid in New Rizvia Society to nab him. He is an outspoken Shia Muslim politician who remained vocal against the violent extremists of the banned Deobandi outfits such as proscribed ASWJ/Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, Taliban etc. He also denounced Lal Masjid cleric for his pro-Taliban stance alongside support to the violence against innocent Muslims.
