Millions of Afghanistan will face famine due to drought this year

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) says millions of Afghans will face famine due to the drought this year.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The International Organization for Migration (IOM) says millions of Afghans will face famine due to the drought this year.

“Afghanistan’s agriculture is heavily dependent on #rain-fed_agriculture and snowmelt,” Nicholas Bishop, emergency response officer at IOM explained, “so the humanitarian response plan for this year is suggesting that as many as 17 million Afghans, or about 42% of the total population, will be impacted by drought and famine.”

The UN Office for the Coordination of #Humanitarian_Affairs (OCHA) said in a report last month that 18.4 million Afghans were in need of humanitarian assistance, more than double last year.

This comes as peace negotiations between the Taliban and Afghan officials have stalled. Violence across the country is on the rise and experts predict a possible drought on the way.
