(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Bahrain’s Cassation Court has upheld the dissolution of the country’s leading opposition movement, the Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society.
Sunday’s ruling marks the end of the appeal process, which Al-Wefaq filed in a bid to challenge its dissolution and the seizure of its assets.
The group was dissolved in July 2016 over a long list of allegations including the supposed “harboring of terrorism”.
The ruling, which was also upheld by the appeals court later that same year, drew condemnation from the United Nations, international rights groups as well as Manama’s allies in Washington and London.
Amnesty International described it as a “flagrant attack on freedom of expression and association and a brazen attempt to suppress criticism of the government in Bahrain.”
Al-Wefaq was the largest group in parliament before its lawmakers resigned en masse in protest at the bloody crackdown on anti-regime protesters in 2011, which left over 100 dead.
