(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Iran stressed the necessity for finding a negotiated solution to the current crisis in Syria, and called for a cessation of hostilities as a prerequisite for talks between the Syrian government and opposition groups.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehman-Parast said "an atmosphere of calm" should prevail Syria prior to talks between representatives of government and opposition groups, and added, "Only under such a condition the legitimate demands of the opposition are heard and the chance is given to the government for reforms."

As regards Iran's plan to resolve the Syrian crisis, the Iranian foreign ministry presser said it is a comprehensive plan free from foreign meddling and can end clashes in Syria.

"Only a plan which is free from interference of foreign parties as well as the stop of violence, arms shipments and terrorist activities can help resolve the Syrian issue."

Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said once again that Iran is ready to host the Syrian opposition groups in Tehran.

He made the remarks in a meeting with visiting Syrian National Reconciliation Minister Ali Heydar on Sunday.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 with organized attacks by well-armed gangs against Syrian police forces and border guards being reported across the country.

Hundreds of people, including members of the security forces, have been killed, when some protest rallies turned into armed clashes.

The government blames outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups for the deaths, stressing that the unrest is being orchestrated from abroad.
