The chairman of the Caucasus Muslims Department, Allashukur Pashazade, has decided to attend a CIS Inter-Religious Council meeting in Armenia.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - The chairman of the Caucasus Muslims Department, Allashukur Pashazade, has decided to attend a CIS Inter-Religious Council meeting in Armenia.

The sheikh was undecided about the visit as recently as last week, the Muslims Department said.

He is to visit the Armenian capital to attend the Presidium of the CIS Inter-Religious Council, of which he is a co-chairman.

Father Vahram Melikyan, spokesman for the Armenian Church's Holy See of Echmiadzin, confirmed that the sheikh would attend the meeting on 29 and 30 November, News.am reported.

"This will be a historic visit by Pashazade to Armenia," a representative of the Russian Orthodox Church, Roman Silantiyev, said.

Father Melikyan said that Patriarch Ilia II of Georgia would not be attending the meeting.

The religious leaders are expected to sign an agreement in Yerevan. Pashazade familiarized himself with the paperwork for the meeting during a trip to Moscow last week.

The head of the Armenian Church, Catholicos Garegin II, visited Baku to attend the World Religions Summit in 2010, where he also held a trilateral meeting with the sheikh and Russian patriarch.

Azerbaijan and Armenia officially remain at war over the Azerbaijani territory of Nagorno-Karabakh. The two countries signed a cease-fire accord in 1994, but a peace deal has yet to be reached.
