An international conference on “Najaf; the Cultural Capital of Islamic World in 2012” opened Monday, March 7, with the presence of eminent Muslim scholars and researchers from Islamic and European countries.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Salah Al-Abidi, member of the organizing committee of the conference said: “the holy city of Najaf is hosting 76 researchers and experts from about 18 countries who will attend 5-session discussions and pay a visit to the historical and religious heritage of Najaf and Kufa.”

“The three-day conference has been organized with the aim of providing a better introduction of the two cities to the participants, clarification of the role of the cities and their importance in the future perspective of the world as well as planning the programs on the occasion of the selection of the holy city of Najaf as the cultural capital of the world of Islam in 2012.”

Yashar Sharif, a Greek Muslim scholar also regarded the conference as a positive step in creating unity among Muslims scholars.

He said: “the objectives of the conference may not be realized very soon, but the gathering of Muslim scholars from various schools of thought in this event and having the opportunity to discuss with one another directly will have influential effects in the Islamic unity.”

The holy city of Najaf was selected as the cultural capital of the world of Islam in 2012 following the agreement made by ministers of culture of Islamic countries attended the meeting in 2008 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
