More than 250 children have registered for an annual Quran Memorization Contest taking place in Bahrain next week.

It will be held at the Al Eslah Society's Muharraq branch on December 26 and December 27, from 4pm to 8pm.

Registration is open until Thursday for children aged between seven and 18 to participate.

Bahrain-based T'azur Company has agreed to sponsor the event, the final ceremony of which will be held on January 6.

"T'azur continuously looks for various means to promote community and spiritual values, therefore we are proud to have the opportunity to partner with Al Eslah Society in sponsoring the Quran Memorization Contest," said board of directors chairman Dr Shaikh Abdulaziz Bin Naif Al Orayer.

"T'azur is committed to support the Islamic activities and encourage the development of the young generation in their noble undertaking of memorizing the Quran."

Wahat Al Qur'an chairman Shaikh Abdulrahman Al Moosa highly valued the role of T'azur in sponsoring such a program which has a great role in social responsibility.

Contestants, ranging from grades one to 12 from schools across Bahrain, compete for the meticulous rendition of the Holy Quran to win prizes.

Participants are chosen at a qualifying ceremony presided over by a jury panel consisting of local Islamic scholars.

"The 13th edition of the contest last year attracted 200 participants including both boys and girls from more than 60 schools," said Mr Al Moosa.

"To qualify all contestants must be able to recite the entire chapters chosen from the Holy Quran from memory.

"Participation in the competition is open for Bahrainis and expatriates."

Wahat Al Quran, which has been operating since 1975, oversees more than 20 Quran learning centers across Bahrain.

They contain more than 100 Quran learning sections with more than 150 teachers and have enrolled more than 1,000 pupils of all ages.
