American Constitution Party gubernatorial candidate Tom Tancredo’s campaign on Thursday stood behind a statement he made in Canon City this week, calling President Barack Obama a greater threat to the American way of life than al-Qaida.

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - During a campaign swing through Southern Colorado on Tuesday, Tancredo told supporters about his perception of the threat Obama poses.

“It’s to the Constitution, to the Bill of Rights,” the Canon City Daily Record quoted him as saying. “It’s not al-Qaida, it’s the guy sitting in the White House.”

Tancredo’s campaign said he’s not alone in that belief.

“Tom isn’t the only one who thinks that the policies of this president and this Congress are the biggest threat to the future of the country,” said Bay Buchanan, Tancredo’s campaign manager. “In July, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, was quoted as saying that ‘Our national debt is our biggest national security threat.’ And he’s right. America is headed for a fiscal train wreck — and the Obama administration has been pressing down on the accelerator for the last two years.”

At an Oct. 22 debate with his opponents, Democrat John Hickenlooper and Republican Dan Maes, Tancredo defended past inflammatory statements he has made.

The moderator pointed to past remarks by Tancredo that called for the bombing of Mecca, characterized Miami as a third-world country, whether he has the temperament to be governor, advocated literacy tests for Colorado voters and painted Obama as the greatest threat to the nation. He then asked whether Tancredo has the temperament to be governor.

“I absolutely do not regret (the statements),” Tancredo answered.

He conceded his words at times can be stark.

“I have a tendency to tell you exactly what I think. It’s controversial,” he said. “It sounds bombastic.”

However, Tancredo said there’s little danger of walking away from a conversation with him and wondering where he stands on an issue.

“You’re going to know exactly what I’m talking about,” he said.
