Two French nationals imprisoned in Iran on spying charges have been released based on a prisoner exchange arrangement between the two countries.
Jacques Paris and Cécile Kohler, who were imprisoned in Iran for being involved in espionage in favor of the French intelligence agency and collaboration in criminal acts against Iranian security, were released in exchange for the release of an Iranian national in France and withdrawing a complaint against Iran in the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Mahdieh Esfandiari, an Iranian national imprisoned in France, has also been released and can return to Iran whenever she wants. She was sentenced to one year in prison and released in February after time served.
In September, the ICJ said it had dropped a case concerning the detention the two French nationals at France’s request.
