Iran’s teachers association urge international bodies to support global efforts to end war

The Islamic Association of Teachers of Iran in separate letters to UNESCO and UNICEF has urged the international organizations to support international efforts to end this war and aggression and to ensure that it is not repeated.

ABNA24 - The Islamic Association of Teachers of Iran in separate letters to UNESCO and UNICEF has urged the international organizations to support international efforts to end this war and aggression and to ensure that it is not repeated.

The blatant attack by the United States and Israel on Iran, in violation of international law, occurred on the morning of February 26, 2026, coinciding with the assassination of leadership and state and military officials amid diplomatic negotiations, and resulted in the killing and wounding of a large number of ordinary people, including children, women, and medical and service personnel, the letter reads.

In response, the Islamic Republic of Iran, in accordance with Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, sought to exercise its right to self-defense, it added.

The most significant unlawful act committed by the United States and Israel on the first day of the aggression was the attack on an elementary school in Minab, which resulted in the massacre of 168 students.

This act constitutes a violation of the principle of distinction between military objectives and civilian persons and property, a breach of international humanitarian law and human rights, and a contravention of the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child, which mandates special protection for children in armed conflict, the body noted.

Furthermore, during the 25 days of aggression against Iran, tragically, 190 students and 51 teachers have been martyred, 183 students and teachers have been injured, and over 644 schools and educational facilities have been destroyed or damaged, the letter said.

More than 25,000 residential units in 180 cities have been destroyed, and over 30,000 civilians have been injured. Cultural and historical sites, such as the Golestan Palace in Tehran and the Chehel Sotoun historical complex in Isfahan—both inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List as part of humanity’s shared heritage—along with 56 museums, historical monuments, and cultural sites, have been attacked and severely damaged, it said.

Attacks on Iran’s infrastructure, refineries, and energy storage facilities have also caused widespread adverse environmental impacts, it stressed.

These attacks have jeopardized the daily necessities of millions of people.

The targeting of hospitals, medical centers, ambulances, rescue and relief centers, the Red Crescent, as well as rehabilitation centers and facilities caring for orphaned and vulnerable children, constitutes a violation of all principles and rules of international humanitarian law.

We expect international organizations to establish an independent and impartial international fact-finding commission to investigate the extensive violations of international humanitarian law and human rights, particularly concerning children and civilians.
