As you are well aware, political science has long served as a discipline guiding humanity out of deep impasses. It has nurtured rationality and insight that have contributed to a profound reduction in violence and the emergence of higher forms of political order. Yet, there have been moments in history when those holding the reins of major powers, disregarding the accumulated wisdom of political science and international relations, have led the world toward violence and the sacrifice of human lives.
A world that was gradually progressing toward sustainable peace now faces sweeping crises born of the war-making tendencies of such profiteers. While modern history had shown the steady advance of societies toward rationalization, their contemporary actions have gravely disrupted this process. The recent all-out military assault on Iran by the United States and Israel, conducted in clear violation of legal and ethical standards governing warfare—through targeted assassinations of political leaders amid negotiations, and through indiscriminate attacks that have killed innocent women and children in schools, hospitals, homes, and markets—represents a dramatic unraveling of the global order.
Iran—one of the ancient cradles and teachers of civilization—has become the target of unprecedented attacks. In our interconnected world of global networks and mutual dependencies, initiating a war of such vast and open-ended dimensions cannot be justified under any defensible principle of international law or morality.
Dear colleagues, the ongoing military campaign by the U.S.–Israeli coalition has moved far beyond the bounds of a conventional operation; it has become an unrestrained assault on the urban and civilizational structures of the Iranian people. You may already know that even historical monuments from pre-Islamic, Islamic, and modern eras—heritages of Middle Eastern civilization—have suffered severe damage in these relentless strikes. Amid this “war of narratives,” we are witnessing the systematic concealment of oppression and humanitarian catastrophe. These asymmetric attacks are intensifying daily, threatening to obliterate Iran’s constitutional system, national identity, and developmental achievements.
From the standpoint of just war principles, it must be recognized that the Iranian people, citizens, and nascent civil institutions must not be conflated with ruling ideologies. The potential loss of Iran’s long-standing achievements in constitutionalism, rule of law, freedom, equality, and industrial and economic modernization—fruits of over 150 years of civic struggle and multiple wars against foreign aggressors (Ottoman, Russian, British, and Iraqi) alongside internal struggles against despotism—poses a grave danger to regional stability and human progress alike.
For decades, the Iranian Political Science Association (IPSA)—comprising scholars and educators of political science and international relations—has been a steadfast advocate of non-violence, democracy, and respect for international norms in both domestic and global contexts. Thus, the members of this Association, while expressing gratitude for the clear, scholarly, and critical positions taken by many of our international colleagues in condemning acts of violence, call upon members of the American Political Science Association to raise their voices against the ongoing atrocities of war and to stand in solidarity with the Iranian people in their historic endeavor to preserve national sovereignty, territorial integrity, liberty, and the institutional foundations of constitutional republicanism.
