French President Emmanuel Macron says he has held a phone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, emphasizing the need for a diplomatic solution to bring an end to the ongoing escalation in West Asia amid the US-Israeli war with Iran.
Macron said on social media platform X Sunday that he and President Masoud Pezeshkian agreed to maintain ongoing contact.
According to the French president, the phone talk stressed the urgent need to halt “Iran’s attacks on regional countries,” ensure freedom of navigation, and end the practical closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Macron also expressed concern over the Iranian nuclear and missile programs.
He emphasized that to address these vital challenges, end escalating tensions, and preserve peace, a diplomatic solution is needed now more than ever.
Meanwhile, several French media outlets, including Le Figaro and BFM TV, reported on Macron’s calls with Pezeshkian as well as with US President Donald Trump, though no further details about Macron’s discussion with Trump were provided at the time of publication.
The United States and Israel launched a war of aggression against Iran on February 28, assassinating Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and top military commanders, despite indirect nuclear negotiations taking place between Tehran and Washington.
The two regimes have also killed more than 1,300 civilians, including children, and attacked non-military sites, among them schools and hospitals.
Within the framework of its legitimate response, the Iranian Armed Forces immediately initiated decisive missile and drone strikes against US bases in the region and targets in Israel.
