Ayatollah Modarresi: Seminary, a dynamic part of Islamic Ummah's entity

Ayatollah Mohammad-Taqi Modarresi, a prominent Iraqi scholar, has emphasized that Islamic seminaries constitute a dynamic component of the Islamic Ummah’s entity, drawing their identity and resilience from adherence to the Two Weighty Things (the Quran and the Prophet’s Household).

AhlulBayt News Agency: Ayatollah Mohammad-Taqi Modarresi, a prominent Iraqi scholar, has emphasized that Islamic seminaries constitute a dynamic component of the Islamic Ummah’s entity, drawing their identity and resilience from adherence to the Two Weighty Things (the Quran and the Prophet’s Household).

In a meeting with representatives of seminary students from the city of Ahvaz, Ayatollah Modarresi highlighted the pivotal role of seminaries in safeguarding the steadfastness of the Islamic community against deviation.

“This institution has raised the flag of the movement and the guardianship of the principles of Sharia and Islamic values in the face of foreign intellectual currents,” he stated.

Tracing the historical and spiritual roots of the seminary, Ayatollah Modarresi described it as “a dynamic part of the Islamic Ummah’s entity” and a natural continuation of the path of those firmly grounded in the knowledge of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the tradition of his Pure Household (PBUT).

“The seminary is the embodiment of the ‘Islamic scholarly community’ that preserves the identity and authenticity of the Ummah,” he added.

Three Core Pillars for Seminarians

Outlining the essential duties and characteristics for both individual seminarians and the seminary as an institution, the distinguished scholar elaborated on three fundamental axes:

1. Contemplation in the Holy Quran
Ayatollah Modarresi stressed that the Quran is the foundation of religion and the program for life. “We must move beyond superficial recitation and reach ‘contemplation upon the verses.’ For the Quran to be a guide in all details of life, it is necessary to link its verses with their corresponding realities,” he asserted.

2. Adherence to the Prophet and His Pure Household (PBUT)
The Ayatollah emphasized that the relationship with the Prophet and his Pure Progeny must be built on “love, adherence, emulation, and acting upon their conduct.”
“The knowledge of the Ahl al-Bayt (PBUT) is a formidable fortress that protects the Muslim intellect from deviation and misguidance,” he noted.

3. Responsibility and Confronting Challenges
Ayatollah Modarresi identified the most critical feature of the seminary as preparing individuals to face “intellectual and psychological challenges” and nurturing them based on Islamic values. He underscored the institution’s commitment to enjoining good and forbidding evil.
“The religious scholar is the primary person responsible for protecting people against imported intellectual currents,” he stated, highlighting the duty to safeguard the community from ideological subversion.

Call for Connection and Sincerity

In his concluding remarks, Ayatollah Modarresi invited the visiting delegation to convey this awareness to society, urging seminarians and scholars to have a place in the hearts of the people and share in their pains and concerns.
“The power of the seminary springs from holding fast to the Two Weighty Things and sincerity in performing the divine mission towards the Ummah,” he declared.
