AhlulBayt News Agency: Palestinian prisoners’ advocacy groups report that over 9,350 Palestinians are currently detained across the occupied territories as of early January 2026.
According to figures released by the Israeli Prison Service, the detainees include 53 women and nearly 350 children, many of whom are held in Megiddo and Ofer prisons.
The rights groups stated that 3,385 Palestinians are under administrative detention without charges, while 1,237 are classified by Israeli authorities as “illegal combatants.”
This figure excludes Gaza detainees held in Israeli military camps under the same category, which also encompasses Arab detainees from Lebanon and Syria.
Advocacy groups highlighted that nearly half of all detainees are imprisoned without charges, either under administrative detention or the “illegal combatant” designation imposed by Israel.
Administrative detainees alone make up more than 36 percent of the total Palestinian prison population.
The conditions in Israeli prisons are described as alarming, with poor hygiene standards, ongoing torture, mistreatment, and systemic oppression.
Palestinian prisoners have frequently resorted to prolonged hunger strikes to protest what they consider unjust detention.
Human rights organizations emphasize that Israel continues to violate the rights and freedoms guaranteed to detainees under the Fourth Geneva Convention and international law.
