AhlulBayt News Agency: British Member of Parliament Richard Burgon has urged the government to take a definitive position and make a "moral and political decision" to stop arms exports to Israel.
His remarks came after the UK Supreme Court, last Monday, dismissed a legal challenge seeking to halt weapons sales to Israel. The court ruled that decisions regarding military exports, including components for F-35 fighter jets, fall within the powers of the government and parliament, not the judiciary.
Burgon warned that if the government fails to act, he intends to propose a parliamentary vote on the matter.
Speaking at a press conference outside the courthouse following the verdict, Burgon told Anadolu Agency that the judgment must not be viewed as "an excuse to evade responsibility."
He noted that while some officials may feel reassured by the decision, interpreting it that way would be "a grave mistake." Burgon emphasized that the court clearly stated the judiciary does not oversee the continuation of such arms exports.
He reaffirmed that decisions on weapons transfers must be made by both Parliament and the government through democratic processes.
