Afghanistan: Nearly 120 schools in Khost lack buildings, education officials confirm

Afghanistan’s education system has faced severe challenges due to conflict and economic instability. In Khost, nearly one-third of public schools operate without buildings, forcing students into inadequate learning conditions.

AhlulBayt News Agency: The Khost Department of Education has reported that 119 out of the 372 public schools in the province lack proper school buildings.

Officials say that the Islamic Emirate is working to secure funding for the construction of facilities to address this issue and provide suitable learning environments for students.

Kherogul Khairkhwah, deputy director of the Khost Department of Education, confirmed the ongoing efforts, stating, “The Islamic Emirate is striving to secure funding to build shelters for these schools.”

In some areas, the conditions are particularly difficult. At Central Khalbisat High School in the Sabari and Yaqubi district, students are forced to study near a cemetery. One of the students, Bakhtullah, noted that funeral services disrupt their studies, causing them to leave school before completing their lessons.

Other students have urged authorities to take concrete action to build proper school facilities.

Mohammad Yousuf, a student, highlighted the extreme weather conditions in Khost, stating, “Compared to other provinces, the weather here is very hot. This environment is not suitable for education, and students are struggling.”

Belal Maftoon echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of constructing schools to enhance learning. “Our request is that a building be constructed for us. It would be very beneficial for our studies,” he said.

The education department estimates that around 300,000 students are currently enrolled in schools across the province, many of whom face challenges due to the lack of infrastructure.
