AhlulBayt News Agency: Palestinian factions have condemned the United States for vetoing a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) draft resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, accusing Washington of complicity in Israeli crimes against Palestinians.
The resolution described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as “catastrophic” and demanded “an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire”, along with the removal of all restrictions on humanitarian aid entering the besieged territory.
During the UNSC meeting on Wednesday, the draft received 14 votes in favor, with the US casting the only vote against—marking the fifth time Washington has blocked a ceasefire resolution aimed at ending Israeli aggression in Gaza.
The Palestinian resistance group Hamas stated that the US veto reflects the American administration’s “blind bias” in favor of the Israeli regime, which it described as “fascist.”
Hamas further accused the United States of disregarding international law and rejecting efforts to halt the bloodshed in Gaza.
“This American stance gives a green light to war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court, to continue the brutal war of genocide against innocent civilians,” Hamas declared.
During the voting session, US Chargé d'affaires to the UN Dorothy Shea defended the veto, arguing that the resolution would “embolden” Hamas. She stated that Washington would not support any measure that does not call for Hamas to disarm and leave Gaza.
Hamas dismissed Shea’s remarks as disinformation, accusing the US of denying the Palestinian people’s legitimate right to resist occupation.
The group urged the international community to demand an immediate halt to Israel’s genocide in Gaza and hold Israeli officials accountable for war crimes.
“The failure of the UN Security Council to stop the genocide that has continued for twenty months, and its inability to break the siege, raises fundamental questions about the role of international institutions and the effectiveness of global laws,” Hamas stated.
Similarly, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad resistance group condemned the US veto, asserting that Washington is directly sponsoring Israeli crimes.
“The United States is a true partner in the barbaric genocide and war crimes perpetrated by the Israeli occupation army in Gaza,” the group said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) said the US veto was unsurprising, given Washington’s continued supply of lethal weapons to the Israeli military.
The veto, it emphasized, serves as “new evidence of direct US complicity” in Israel’s genocide in Gaza and American hostility toward the Palestinian people.
Israel launched its US-backed military campaign in Gaza on October 7, 2023, following a Hamas operation against Israeli forces in retaliation for Tel Aviv’s intensified atrocities against Palestinians.
So far, Israel has killed at least 54,607 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured 125,341 others in the blockaded territory.
