With Eid al-Adha approaching, the Iraqi interior minister stressed the need to secure parks and holy places that host people and pilgrims during Eid celebrations.

AhlulBayt News Agency: With Eid al-Adha approaching, the Iraqi interior minister stressed the need to secure parks and holy places that host people and pilgrims during Eid celebrations.

Abdul Amir al-Shammari attended a security meeting on Sunday to review plans for ensuring security during the Eid events.

He announced that 16 specialized committees have been formed to implement the regional security system in all governorates of the country, al-Furat News reported.

Al-Shammari stressed the need to provide all the necessary resources and capabilities to ensure the success of this new security initiative.

He also emphasized the importance of ensuring the security of all areas, including holy shrines, parks and areas that are expected to witness the mass attendance of citizens on Eid al-Adha.

He added that intelligence efforts and emergency patrols must intensify as part of the Eid plan.

The meeting was attended by the deputy minister for police affairs as well as the Baghdad police commanders and all the provincial commanders.

Eid al-Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, is a major religious holiday in Islam, celebrated on the 10th day of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah (June 6 this year).

It commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son, Ismail (Ishmael), in obedience to God's command, according to the Islamic faith.

The date of Eid al-Adha is determined by the sighting of the new moon and comes after the Hajj pilgrimage.
