UNRWA chief calls for political action to end mass starvation in Gaza

UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini has called for urgent political action to stop mass starvation in Gaza, criticizing the inadequate aid deliveries. He noted that only 900 trucks have entered Gaza in two weeks, far below daily humanitarian needs. Lazzarini urged a return to large-scale aid efforts seen during the previous ceasefire.

AhlulBayt News Agency: UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini has emphasized the urgent need for political will to halt the ongoing mass starvation in Gaza.

In his social media remarks on Friday, Lazzarini stated, “We are not asking for the impossible. Allow the UN, including UNRWA and humanitarian partners, to do our work: assist people in need and preserve their dignity.”

He criticized the continued political blame game, warning that the people of Gaza are starving while enduring relentless bombardments.

Lazzarini pointed out that reports indicate only 900 trucks have entered Gaza in the past two weeks, amounting to a mere 10 percent of the daily humanitarian needs of the population. He described the current aid efforts as wholly inadequate, given the scale of suffering.

Recalling the ceasefire earlier this year, he noted that when political barriers were temporarily lifted, the UN, including UNRWA, was able to bring in between 600 to 800 aid trucks daily, preventing a man-made famine. He called for immediate action to restore that level of humanitarian assistance.
