Nigerian judge imposes heavy fines on released Free Zakzaky protesters; 33 prisoners released

After nearly six years in prison, 33 Free Zakzaky protesters have been released following a ruling by Judge Sulaiman Belgore. However, the court imposed fines on each of them, leading to public criticism

AhlulBayt News Agency: After spending nearly six years in detention, 29 brothers and 4 sisters who had been held in Kuje Prison regained their freedom today, Monday, May 26, 2025. The ruling was delivered by Judge Sulaiman Belgore.

However, the judgment faced criticism from many, as the judge imposed a fine of N120,000 for each individual to be paid to TV Channels and an additional N50,000 to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). Alternatively, they would have to spend another year in prison.

These individuals had been incarcerated since July 22, 2019, following their arrest during a peaceful protest advocating for Free Zakzaky in Abuja.

On May 14, 2025, the same court had discharged and acquitted 24 out of 60 brothers and sisters, clearing them of the major charge of murder, which was the most serious among the six counts filed against them.

During the last court session, while 24 were released, these 33 individuals were sent back to prison, prolonging their ordeal until today's judgment finally granted them their freedom.
