AhlulBayt News Agency: Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court has urged Muslims across the Kingdom to observe the sky on Tuesday, May 27, to sight the crescent moon marking the beginning of Dhul Hijjah.
The announcement, reported by the Saudi Press Agency, emphasized that individuals who spot the crescent should report to the nearest court and officially document their sighting.
The start of Dhul Hijjah is significant in the Islamic calendar, as it determines the dates of the annual Hajj pilgrimage and Eid al-Adha celebrations.
The pilgrimage begins on the 8th day of Dhul Hijjah and lasts until the 13th. This year, Hajj is expected to take place between June 4 and June 9, 2025.
The moon sighting will also finalize the date for Eid al-Adha, which falls on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah. The Day of Arafat, observed on the 9th of the month, is expected to occur on June 5.
Eid al-Adha is one of the most significant Islamic holidays, commemorating Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God.
Muslims worldwide mark the day with congregational prayers, acts of charity, and the ritual sacrifice of an animal, often a sheep, goat, or cow.
