AhlulBayt News Agency: The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Michael Fakhri, has stated that Israel’s designated food distribution areas in Gaza are politically motivated rather than humanitarian. He asserted that Israel is conducting a starvation campaign, specifically targeting children in Gaza.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, Fakhri accused Israel of committing ethnic cleansing in Gaza and deliberately starving over two million Palestinians living in the besieged Strip. He warned that at least 1,000 aid trucks need to enter Gaza daily to meet essential humanitarian needs, far more than Israel allowed on Monday.
Israel announced that it permitted the first humanitarian convoy since March 2 to enter Gaza, consisting of just nine food trucks. The United Nations described this amount as "a drop in the ocean" compared to the urgent need. Since March 2, Israel has closed Gaza’s border crossings, blocking all humanitarian assistance and causing famine across the region.
Fakhri criticized Israel’s actions, stating that if it truly cared for Gaza’s children, it would not be deliberately depriving them of food.
Meanwhile, 23 countries and senior EU officials issued a joint statement urging Israel to resume the entry of humanitarian aid immediately. They warned of a worsening famine risk and condemned Israel’s current aid policies.
On the same day, leaders of France, the United Kingdom, and Canada threatened to take action against Israel if it did not end its ongoing military campaign in Gaza, which has continued since October 7, 2023. They described the humanitarian suffering in Gaza as unbearable and labeled Israel’s limited aid delivery as entirely insufficient.
This statement followed an announcement from the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which confirmed that aid entry was approved based on military recommendations. Reports indicate that this decision is linked to expanding Israel’s military operations in the region.
The World Food Program (WFP) warned that Gaza is facing imminent famine and called on the international community to act urgently to resume the flow of aid.
Alongside the tightened blockade, Israel continues daily airstrikes and artillery attacks on civilian neighborhoods and infrastructure, causing significant casualties.
On Sunday, Israel launched a new military operation in Gaza, named "Gideon’s Chariots," which reportedly includes plans for full military occupation of the territory. This development comes as ceasefire negotiations in Doha reach a critical stage
