Israel imposes facial recognition screening for Palestinian aid recipients

Israel has approved a plan requiring Palestinians to undergo facial recognition screening to receive humanitarian aid. The UN and rights groups have condemned the move, warning that it reinforces control over essential supplies and deepens the blockade.

AhlulBayt News Agency: The Israeli regime has approved a plan to use advanced facial recognition technology to screen Palestinians in need of humanitarian aid.

Media reports indicate that Israeli cabinet members have imposed new restrictions on the distribution of food and aid supplies in Gaza, including mandatory facial recognition.

According to NPR, Palestinians will be required to register and undergo facial recognition screening before collecting aid parcels for their families.

The plan is reportedly part of a broader strategy to push Palestinian civilians into smaller, consolidated areas, allowing the Israeli military to expand its control over Gaza.

A Sweden-based human rights group, Skyline International for Human Rights (SIHR), has condemned the move, calling it a dangerous shift from traditional humanitarian organizations to for-profit companies controlling aid distribution.

SIHR stated that the policy forces Palestinians to surrender their biometric data—such as facial and iris scans—in exchange for essential aid like food, water, and medical care.

The organization warned that what is being presented as humanitarian relief is, in reality, a system of mass surveillance that deepens the ongoing blockade and divides Gaza into digitally enforced zones of control.

The New York Times previously reported that Israel had already deployed facial recognition technology from private Israeli company Corsight and Google Photos. However, the system reportedly failed to function effectively.

The United Nations has condemned the latest Israeli restrictions, with UNICEF spokesman James Elder stating that the policy contravenes basic humanitarian principles and is designed to reinforce control over life-sustaining items as a pressure tactic.

The UN has repeatedly warned of a man-made famine across Gaza if Israeli forces continue to block aid.
