AhlulBayt News Agency: Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf has emphasized the need for Iran and Algeria to collaborate in facilitating humanitarian aid deliveries to the war-ravaged Gaza Strip.
Qalibaf made these remarks during a meeting with Ibrahim Boughali, President of the National People's Assembly of Algeria, in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Wednesday. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 19th high-level parliamentary session of the Parliamentary Union of the Member States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (PUIC).
He stressed the importance of unity and coherence among Muslim nations in confronting Israeli aggression in Palestine and restoring the rights of the oppressed Palestinian people in Gaza.
Qalibaf criticized the lack of unity among Muslim countries in supporting Palestine, stating, “Today, not only do some Muslim countries fail to support Palestine, but also a number of them back the Zionists in such oppressive conditions.”
He urged Muslim nations to find a solution and encourage other countries to remain engaged with the Palestinian issue to help achieve a final victory.
Additionally, Qalibaf called on the parliaments of Muslim countries to adopt a clear and transparent stance on the Palestinian issue.
Escalation in Gaza
The Israeli military resumed bombardment of Gaza on March 18, killing thousands of Palestinians and injuring many others. This attack followed the collapse of a two-month ceasefire agreement with Hamas and the deal on the exchange of Israeli captives with Palestinian detainees.
Since October 7, 2023, at least 52,928 Palestinians have been killed, mostly women and children, while another 119,846 individuals have been injured in the ongoing Israeli military assault on Gaza.
On Monday, the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas announced its readiness to engage in negotiations for a lasting ceasefire in Gaza.
Iran-Algeria Bilateral Cooperation
Qalibaf also highlighted the potential for Iran and Algeria to strengthen ties in industry, health, and transportation.
Boughali, for his part, warned that normalization of relations with Israel by some countries would not serve their interests but would instead embolden the regime to commit more crimes.
He further pointed out that forced displacement, lack of medicine, and food shortages are among the most serious challenges facing Palestine today. He urged Muslim countries to take stronger steps toward restoring Palestinian rights in international courts.
Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
Since March 2, no humanitarian assistance has reached Gaza. International organizations warn that half a million people, a quarter of Gaza’s population, face starvation unless aid deliveries resume soon.
On bilateral cooperation, Boughali emphasized that Tehran and Algiers can leverage their economic capacities to strengthen cooperation.
