Iran rejects U.S. claims, asserts right to peaceful uranium enrichment

Iran’s Deputy Chief of AEOI, Behrouz Kamalvandi, rejected U.S. claims, reaffirming Tehran’s right to a peaceful nuclear program. He cited multiple countries that enrich uranium without possessing nuclear arms, countering Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s assertion that Iran should import uranium rather than enrich it.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Iran’s Deputy Chief of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), Behrouz Kamalvandi, has rejected recent remarks by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, stating that Iran is not the only country that enriches uranium without possessing nuclear weapons.

In response to Rubio’s claim that only nuclear-armed nations carry out uranium enrichment, Kamalvandi pointed out that Belgium, the Netherlands, South Korea, Japan, Argentina, and Germany all conduct uranium enrichment while remaining non-nuclear states.

On May 6, Kamalvandi reaffirmed Iran’s right to maintain a peaceful nuclear program, including uranium enrichment, emphasizing that the country has legitimate reasons for advancing its civilian nuclear technology.

He further criticized Western countries for abandoning their nuclear projects in Iran after the victory of the Islamic Revolution, stressing that Iran cannot rely solely on fossil fuels to meet its energy needs.

"The U.S. Secretary of State’s claim is inaccurate," Kamalvandi noted. "Countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium, South Korea, Brazil, and Japan also enrich uranium without possessing nuclear weapons," he said, referring to Rubio’s suggestion that Iran should import enriched uranium rather than produce it domestically.
