Children, victims of American economic terrorism: Iran's envoy

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Iranian top diplomat said that threatening the lives of children for political purposes is nothing but economic terrorism.

Counsellor Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran at UNGA, Mohammad Hassani-Nejad at a meeting of the UN General Assembly's Third Committee on 'Promoting and Protecting the Rights of the Child', emphasized that Iranian children are the first victims of unilateral economic sanctions slapped illegally by the United States in violation of all international legal principles and ethical norms.

He also said despite the steps taken to implement the Convention on the Rights of the Child, millions of children worldwide still spend their lives in Armed conflicts, wars, and foreign occupation.

Iran's representative described the fact that one-third of the world's population lives in the countries that are subject to unilateral coercive acts or unilateral sanctions as a painful and very worrying fact, saying that when the world is silent and indifferent towards these illegal acts, the most vulnerable in society, particularly children, the elderly, and people in need of medical care, such as children suffering from leukemia or other rare cancers and diseases, are the main victims of America's coercive unilateral action.

In another part of his speech, Hassani-Nejad said the Islamic Republic of Iran, despite four decades of unjust sanctions and threats, has made significant progress in improving the lives of children and has taken some steps to protect and promote the rights of children.

He added: "Under the slogan of development of child rights and in order to raise awareness and provide counseling and protect children's rights, eleven specialized child rights clinics have been set up in provincial centers and major cities throughout the Islamic Republic of Iran. It is hoped that these clinics will be set up in all Iranian provinces."
