Iran's Larijani raps UNSC for failure to prevent wars in region

Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani blasted the UN Security Council for lack of effective action to prevent the devastating wars in the regional states.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani blasted the UN Security Council for lack of effective action to prevent the devastating wars in the regional states.

"If we look at the international scene, the regional approaches and happening of several wars indicate that the UNSC is not acting upon its responsibilities," Larijani said, addressing the second edition of an international gathering of parliament speakers from Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, Turkey, China and Russia on fight against terrorism and expansion of inter-regional ties in Tehran on Saturday.

"The regional wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and other countries show that this (UNSC) body is not acting on the basis of its responsibilities," he added.

Larijani also lambasted the US for its unilateralism, and said, "Trump's behavior has trampled upon human rights' principles and disappointed the countries and they are displeased with the management system that the Americans call as the world order."

The UNSC has recently been criticized for its indifference to the plights and mass killings of Yemeni people by the Saudi-led coalition.

Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Gholamali Khoshrou asked the UN Security Council to play a more active role in the confrontation against massacres and crimes against humanity.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran fully shares the sentiment that the international community must be vigilant not to let the horrors of mass killings and genocide of the past be repeated in the future. No one forgets how the inaction on the part of the United Nations in the face of tragic cases of genocide and crimes against humanity as well as outrageous acts of aggression in the last two decades led to the death, injury and displacement of millions of innocent people," Khoshrou said, addressing the UN General Assembly’s meeting on 'Responsibility to Protect populations from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity' in July.

He lashed out at the UN Security Council for its lack of political will and action towards crimes against humanity.

"The authorization by the Security Council should not be understood as a carte blanch for committing new atrocities. It also goes without saying that the Security Council is not free to selectively opt for authorization of use of force in cases consistent with the will of its Member States and turn a blind eye on clear situations of mass atrocities as we have witnessed in the past and we are currently witnessing," Khoshrou added.
