(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Spanish police on Monday detained a suspected ISIS member suspected of using his contacts as a boxing instructor to recruit people to carry out terrorist attacks in Europe, Spain's Interior Ministry said.
The Moroccan national, a boxing trainer suspected of indoctrinating extremists since 2010, was taken into custody in the northern coastal town of San Sebastian, the ministry said in a statement.
The suspect was "very active" in recruiting efforts online and through personal contacts through his work as a boxing trainer, according to the statement.
Those enlisted by the suspect's efforts - predominantly "young people threatened by social exclusion" - had been sent to Turkey, where they were trained to carry out attacks in Europe, according to the ministry.
The Moroccan national led an ISIS cell that included at least two other men who were detained in Morocco and France in recent weeks, the ministry said.
A total of 181 terrorists have so far been taken into Spanish custody since June 2015, when the country's terrorism alert was raised to the second-highest level of 4, the statement read.
