(AhlulBayt News Agency) - An Iranian deputy foreign minister said the recent ceasefire in Syria, brokered by Russia and the US, will not be effectual as long as Washington lacks a “clear and genuine” policy on the fight against terrorist groups in the Arab country.
Speaking at a press conference in Damascus, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari described the recent ceasefire in Syria as a serious litmus test for sincerity of the US, one of the parties that brokered the truce.
“We believe that continuation of that agreement should be based on transparency and sincerity in the US policy on the battle against the terrorist groups,” the Iranian diplomat stressed, adding that a lasting ceasefire will be impossible without such a genuine desire.
Pointing to Saturday’s bombing of Syrian army forces near the city of Deir ez-Zor by US warplanes, Jaberi Ansari said the attack, followed by a Daesh (ISIL) offensive, was not coincidental and proved support for the terrorist groups by certain parties.
US-led coalition jets on Saturday bombed Syrian government forces’ positions near Deir ez-Zor, killing scores of troops and paving the way for Daesh militants.
On Monday, Syria’s military declared an end to the week-long ceasefire brokered by the US and Russia, blaming terrorist groups for repeated violations and launching attacks.
