AhlulBayt News Agency - A suicide bomber attacked a security checkpoint in northern Baghdad on Sunday, killing at least 17 people, Iraqi officials said.
The bomber, who was on foot, detonated his device at one of the busy entrances of the Shiite district of Kadhimiyah, killing at least eight civilians and three policemen, a police officer said. At least 32 others were wounded.
Local sources reported that the explosion was carried out via a suicide bomber.
ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack. Security forces and public areas, mainly in Shiite areas, are one of the most frequent targets for the extremist group, which controls key areas in mainly northern and western Iraq.
Kazimiyyah is a large Shi’ite neighborhood which hosts a holy shrine of the Shi’ite Muslims.
Baghdad has recently witnessed several deadly explosions, one of which killed 292 people in Karrada district early in July.
