Concurrent with the anniversary of martyrdom of 8th Infallible Imam of the Prophet of Islam Mohammad (PBUH) Household, Imam Reza (AS), all of the Iran's cities mourned this sad occasion.
Since the night and day the processions of the faithful streaming in and out of the sprawling mausoleum, reciting elegies and beating their chests rhythmically.
Imam Reza (AS) was forcibly brought to Khorasan from holy Medina by the crafty Abbasid caliph, Ma'moun and two years later when his plot to deceive the people by proclaiming the Prophet's 8th Infallible Successor as the heir apparent failed, he treacherously poisoned him to death.
Imam Reza's (AS) shrine is the holiest spot in Iran and on special occasions of the year, millions of pilgrims from all over the country and from around the world come to Mashhad to pay their homage.
Similar mourning ceremonies were held throughout Iran, especially in the holy city of Qom, where the 8th Imam's sister, Hazrat Fatima al-Ma'suma (SA) reposes in her eternal peace.
