Mortar shells have slammed into a mosque in the Syrian capital of Damascus as bitter clashes are underway between the government forces and foreign-backed insurgents.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - The Syrian army troops and terrorist groups were exchanging fierce fire in the Sidi Miqdad neighborhood of Damascus on Friday, when insurgents armed with rocket launchers fired projectiles at the place of worship.

On Thursday, Syrian forces fully purged the Jobar district of Damascus of insurgents, killing dozens of them in the process.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 and many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the turmoil.

Damascus says ‘outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorists’ are the driving factor behind the unrest and deadly violence, but the opposition accuses the security forces of being behind the killings.

The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country and holds Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey responsible for arming the opposition.
