(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon underlined the importance of finding a peaceful solution to the crisis in Syria through dialogue between the government and opposition, warning that any military option or militarization in Syria will aggravate the crisis.
Ki-moon called in a press conference from Tehran upon all parties in Syria to discard violence and lay down arms, and start dialogue to solve the crisis, indicating that diplomacy at this stage is aimed at searching for means and mechanisms to restore peace and security to Syria.
''At this point, it is of great importance to us that all parties discard violence…We call upon all players in Syria to lay down arms and opt for peaceful solutions, and initiate dialogue between the Syrian government and opposition in a positive atmosphere,'' Ki-moon said, warning that any military option or militarization in Syria will aggravate the crisis.
He said that the UN envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, has to work to bring the viewpoints of all parties closer on the basis of the plan of the former UN envoy Kofi Annan, Geneva statement, and the reports of the UN monitoring committees in Syria.
''It is important that all parties in Syria feel a historic responsibility at this moment so that the Syrian people can go back to their normal life,'' he added.
Ki-moon said his talks in Tehran with the Syrian delegation to NAM Summit and the Iranian officials emphasized the peaceful solutions to solving the crisis in Syria.
He called for settling all international and regional disputes through peaceful solutions, hoping that Muslim countries and NAM will work to achieve peace in the region, indicating that Iran can play a pivotal role in finding initiatives for solving international and regional conflicts.
Ki-Moon also voiced support for Iran possessing a peaceful nuclear program , stressing that the time has come for ending all conflicts through peaceful methods.
He said that he came to Tehran to join diplomatic efforts and to discuss the Iranian nuclear program, adding that his participation in the summit and his meetings with Iranian officials were productive, constructive and beneficial.
Ki-Moon stressed that there's an opportunity for Ian to emerge as a player on the international arena due to its pioneering regional and international roles, lauding Iran's positive support for the Afghani people.
