(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - “It is our destiny in NAM to play a critical role in such critical moments,” Morsi said in an address to the 16th NAM summit, which opened in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Thursday.
The Non-Aligned Movement “was successful in changing some visions and divisions of its founding members from principals to actions, and from ideas to behavior, and from points of weakness into potential power of action on the international level,” Morsi stated.
“NAM success depends on unity among its members.”
Morsi handed over the NAM presidency to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Thursday.
The Egyptian president called for participation of NAM members in reforming international bodies such as the United Nations and the UN Security Council, and he urged bigger participation of NAM states in the decision-making process of the Security Council.
Morsi also stated that Africa must have a permanent representative in the UN Security Council.
Referring to the issue of Palestine, the Egyptian president said Cairo will support the full membership of Palestine in the UN.
Morsi also criticized the Israeli regime for refusing to join the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), saying the Middle East must be free from nuclear weapons and that all nations have the right to have access to peaceful nuclear energy.
The Egyptian president also expressed gratitude to the Islamic Republic of Iran for hosting the summit.
This is the first visit by an Egyptian president to Iran since the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979.
