(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Speaking at the launch of a major new Wikileaks investigation, Julian Assange said, “9/11 has provided a license for European countries, United States, Canada, Australia, South Africa and others to develop spying system to defect all of us.”
Wikileaks says that initially the global surveillance industry sold western intelligence agencies equipment to enable them to track people via the internet or mobile phones.
Then they started to sell them, at enormous profit, to dictatorial regimes such as Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.
According to Wikileaks, this was done with the knowledge of western governments and directly led to a clamp down on freedom of speech and to human rights abuses.
The new research revealed that Blackberry, iPhone and Gmail are particularly susceptible to being tracked.
Assange also added that the only way to fight this matter is to expose the global surveillance industry in the media and to push for its regulation.
In October 2010, Wikileaks published 400,000 classified US documents on the Iraq war, with the website claiming that the documents show an additional undisclosed 15,000 Iraqi civilian deaths.
The website also posted 77,000 secret US files on the war in Afghanistan back in July of the same year.
Wikileaks has come under severe criticism from Western governments and mainstream, pro-state media outlets for publicizing the sensitive and secretive data that they had long been trying to hide from the public.
