(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - On August 25th of 1978 Imam Musa A'Sadr, a leading Shi'a figure in Lebanon disappeared after arriving in Libya along with his two companions Sheikh Muhammad Yaacoub and journalist Abbas Badreddine.

Sadr had met with Muammar Qaddafi prior to his disappearance. Now with the near fall of the Qaddafi regime and the Libyan revolution, there are hopes that Imam Sadr may yet return.

The Sadr family has issued a statement urging the Libyan National Transitional Council to follow through with what is widely believed to be an abduction crime by the Qaddafi regime. The family has also called for taking measures to protect the Imam and his two aides whom they believe are still alive in Libyan prisons.

On the official level, Lebanon had issued arrest warrents against Gaddafi and 17 members of his country's intelligence. Now Lebanon's government, which has recognized Libya's National Transitional Council ,has expressed its support for the Sadr Family's statement asking that this case be dealt with sooner rather than later.

Sadr was seen by the Lebanese public as a leader and guide and his disappearance was considered a great loss that left behind a noticeable void.

Imam Sadr played a great role in unifying the Lebanese parties and saw Lebanon's religious diversity as a source of enrichment and not strife. He was known for his firm belief that different religious sects in Lebanon were not each others' enemies but rather that the common enemy was Israel .
