(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - The EU has so far imposed travel bans and asset freezes on 35 people and four companies in connection with a violent crackdown on Syrian anti-regime protesters - most recently on Tuesday. It has also issued an embargo on certain weapons, such as anti-riot gear.
Some officials have called for the bloc to start targeting sanctions at Syria's lucrative oil sector.
When asked if that was an option being considered, a spokesman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said that "we're discussing with the 27 whether it's appropriate to add to the sanctions."
"We have to do an analysis of the role that these people play in the repression before we can come to any judgment," Michael Mann told reporters in Brussels.
Diplomats said all EU countries agree that a "qualitative tightening" of the sanctions should be possible.
EU ambassadors hope to see governments in the Arab world backing the statement, diplomats said.
